Mary Gloria Gilvary

Mary Gloria Gilvary, 81, of Avoca, passed away on March 15, 2021 at the Gardens at East Mountain, Wilkes-Barre. Born March 19, 1939 in Pittston, PA, she was the daughter of the late Mary (Gilroy) and Joseph Gilvary. Gloria was raised in Avoca and was a graduate of Avoca High School class of 1957. She was employed in New York by the Donnelley Directory (a company of Dun & Bradstreet Corporation) and after thirty-five years she retired from the Scranton Office of Donnelly Directory.

Gloria was a devoted member of Queen of the Apostles Parish Church (St Mary’s) Avoca where she served as an active member of the Alter and Rosary Society, as a Eucharistic Minister, on the Social Concerns Committee, and in other roles. Gloria was a faithful member of the Parish Choir and the Community Choir in Avoca.


Gloria was preceded in death by brothers Martin, John, Patrick, and Joseph; and sisters Ellen (Gilvary) Gilhooley and JoAnn (Gilvary) Lyons.


Surviving are her two sisters Sr. Catherine Ann Gilvary, IHM and Pauline (Gilvary) Craig and husband Jack (Harrisburg); brother-in-law Charles Lyons; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.


The family would like to extend their deep appreciation for the high quality of care that Gloria received from the staff at The Gardens at East Mountain, Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dr. James Sheerer and Dr. Scott McGrath.

A mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, March 20, 2021 at 11:00am at Queen of The Apostles Parish Church, 715 Hawthorne St., Avoca with Fr. Phillip Sladicka officiating. Friends may call for a walk thru visitation on Saturday morning from 10:00am until time of mass. If attending the visitation or mass please be mindful that facial masks and safe social distancing are mandatory at all times per CDC regulations. Interment will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Avoca.


Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Kiesinger Funeral Services, Inc., 255 McAlpine St., Duryea.
