Michael O’Brien, 76, of Pittston, passed away on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. He was born in Avoca on August 22, 1947, and was the son of the late Michael J. O’Brien and Mary J. (Moore) O’Brien.
Michael was a graduate of Scranton Prep, class of 1963, and then attended the University of Notre Dame. Michael joined the US Army and served during the Vietnam War having served with the signal corps division. When Mike was discharged from the Army, he returned home and worked as a disc jockey for WPTS, Pittston and then for WCDL, Carbondale. He then worked in retail for many years and retired from MetLife Insurance Company. After retirement, he sought employment with the Bureau of Aging and worked as an ambassador for veterans located at the Wilkes-Barre Scranton International Airport.
Mike was a diehard NY Yankees fan and a fan of Notre Dame Football. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife Katherine Yanchis O’Brien, who died January 2, 2015, and his step daughter Jennifer Durako.
He is survived by his granddaughter Jacquelyn Durako, his brothers, Kevin, of Avoca, James of Archbald and Thomas of New Jersey and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held on Sunday, August 25th at 5pm at Kiesinger Funeral Services, Inc., 255 McAlpine St., Duryea with Fr. Michael Klotten officiating. Friends may call for visitation from 5pm-7pm. AMVETS Honor Guard of Greater Pittston will provide military honors.
