Theresa L. Elko

Theresa L. Elko, 91, of Dupont, passed away on Wednesday, June 7th, 2023, at the Elan Skilled Nursing and Rehab Center, Scranton. She was born in Dupont onNovember 13, 1931 and was the daughter of the late Joseph and Lottie Wrazien Waskiewicz.

Theresa was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish Church, Dupont. She was a graduate of Dupont High School and attended business college locally. She worked in many clerical and secretarial positions throughout her life, and retired from Geisinger Medical Center.


She was a member of the senior outreach program of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. For many years, Theresa served as a Girl Scout Leader Troop 886, Dupont and was also awarded the Hidden Heroine Award from Penn’s Woods Girl Scout Council.


Theresa was an avid baker; no holiday was complete without a tray of Theresa’s cookies. A nurturer and caregiver to members of her family, she will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Theresa’s words of advice were “never look back always look forward”.


In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Joseph P. Elko, who died December 31, 2011, and her brother Joseph Waskiewicz.


Theresa is survived by her daughters, Karen Haberek, of Moosic and Patricia Haberek and her husband Joseph, of Moosic, grandchildren, Phillip Haberek and his wife Katie, Ross Haberek, Jennifer Haberek, Sarah Lamotta and her husband Jeffrey. Also surviving are her great grandchildren, Koby, Khloe and Lorelai Lamotta and Theo Haberek and many nieces and nephews.


Theresa’s family would like to thank Dr. Jennifer Hanson for her many years of excellent care as well as the entire staff of Elan Nursing and Rehab Center, especially the 5th floor angels and the staff of Hospice of The Sacred Heart.


A mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, June 12, 2023, at 10:30am at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish Church, 215 Lackawanna Ave., Dupont. with Fr. Thomas Petro officiating. Friends may call for visitation on Monday morning from 9:00am- 10:00am at Kiesinger Funeral Services, Inc., 255 McAlpine St., Duryea. Interment will be held at the parish cemetery.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude PL, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
